When I started with my G27 on my Mac, the wheel would not work at all, I could not steer, use the pedals, none of the buttons, anything, Its just not supported by mac (G27) for some reason. Which really confuses me. But since you have a mac, and if you are planning on getting G27 Combo, that would be the only thing you would need to do.

After that, You will see 'process Completed at the bottom of the 'Free The Wheel window. Now just exit that window, and load up ATS or ETS. You will have to click on the 'Free The Wheel' app icon prior to every use to enable all of the buttons within your G27 Combo.

Probably the best controller I've used. Feels so good. $49 really isn't that expensive for an incredibly designed, expensive feeling, easy to use product.

For you guys whining about that lack of a charging cable, remember one came with your apple TV, iPhone, iPad, iPod etc. I'm pretty certain it's not that big of a deal to use that charging cable for a few hours per month to charge your controller. If you are worried because it's not 'designed by Apple in California', just buy the thing! It is up to par with apple's design for sure.
